ARE YOU UNFOCUSED WHILE INTERPRETING?

As an interpreter, you have to do two things at once: listen and interpret. So you should stay focused. It is important to listen carefully to what the speaker is saying, in order to translate it as well as possible with a minimum of delay, but at the same time, you must convey the message in the target language.

If you are distracted, you may lose the thread of the discussion. You should always have a Pen and notebook/Paper to write down the important things.

You should try to work in a quiet place to avoid distractions.

DO YOU TALK TOO FAST?

If you think that ‘If you talk fast, that can be tempting in order to avoid a big gap between the speaker’s speech and yours.’ Unfortunately, your thinking is wrong and this is a bad idea.

You should keep a steady pace. Rushing could lead to mistakes or getting lost, or even lose your listeners while your job is to enable them to understand everything.

DO YOU LOSE TEMPER?

You should keep your cool.

If you make a mistake in the translation, It can happen, so you should correct it and go back to your interpretation. If you could not listen some words or any sentence, you can ask for repetition, if you are unable to follow, try to inform the speaker, it is your job to make yourself understood: it is a team effort.

You should not make too much of an apology, as this will waste time and may distract you from the speech to be translated.

If the person to be interpreted speaks too fast, do not let him/her lose you.
